The Boy They Called "Dr. Bug" Is Born
Satoshi Tajiri is born in Setagaya, Tokyo, and grows up in then-rural Machida, where rice paddies, streams and forests teem with insects. He becomes so obsessed with catching, identifying and trading beetles and stag beetles that the neighborhood children nickname him "Dr. Bug," and he dreams of becoming an entomologist. As Tokyo's suburbs are paved over and the bug habitats vanish, that lost childhood ritual of hunting and swapping living creatures becomes the emotional seed of an entire universe.
Did you know? The Pokémon Bug Catcher trainer class and the way creatures are 'caught' and 'traded' are direct echoes of Tajiri literally swapping beetles with friends as a kid — he wanted future children to feel that thrill even in a concrete city.

Game Freak: A Stapled Fanzine Is Born
Disenchanted with the shallow arcade games flooding Japan, the teenage Tajiri hand-writes and staples together a 14-page zine called Game Freak and sells it for 200 yen — a guide of high-score strategies and hidden tricks. A young artist named Ken Sugimori spots it in a dōjinshi shop, is captivated, and writes in offering to illustrate; by the ninth issue he is the magazine's artist and Tajiri's lifelong creative partner. One issue cracking the Xevious high score reportedly sells over 10,000 copies — proof that a couple of obsessive fans can move a crowd.
Did you know? The company name 'Game Freak' literally comes from this homemade arcade zine — the future studio behind a global franchise was named after a photocopied, hand-stapled fan magazine.

Game Freak Becomes a Studio
Convinced the only way to fix bad games is to build better ones, Tajiri and Sugimori incorporate Game Freak Inc. on April 26, 1989 — turning a fan magazine into a real development studio. Tajiri, largely self-taught, had spent years reverse-engineering how games worked; now he had a company to prove it. It is a tiny, scrappy operation, but it is the vessel that will carry a six-year obsession to its conclusion.
Did you know? Tajiri reportedly disassembled a Famicom to teach himself how it worked, learning programming essentially from scratch before founding the studio that would eventually co-own one of the most valuable media franchises on Earth.

Quinty — Game Freak's First Real Game
On June 27, 1989, Namco publishes Quinty for the Famicom — the studio's debut, a frantic action-puzzler where players flip floor tiles to crush enemies. Tajiri had spent roughly a year building it after years teaching himself to code; its success gives the fledgling studio the credibility and cash to dream bigger. Released in North America in 1990 as Mendel Palace, it is the proof-of-concept that a fanzine kid could actually ship a game.
Did you know? Quinty's success is what emboldened Tajiri to pursue his far riskier idea — a game about catching and trading hundreds of creatures — meaning a tile-flipping puzzle game is the direct financial springboard for Pokémon.

The Link Cable Epiphany & "Capsule Monsters"
Watching kids hunched over Game Boys wired together by a Link Cable to play Tetris, Tajiri has his lightning bolt: he imagines tiny creatures crawling back and forth through that cable from one player to another — bug-trading, reborn in silicon. He sketches a concept he calls Capsule Monsters, named after gashapon capsule-toy machines and Ultraman's capsule kaiju, complete with a Kanto-like map and creatures that players would lure, collect and swap. The Link Cable, designed for competition, becomes instead the franchise's defining metaphor: connection.
Did you know? Nearly every other Game Boy game treated the Link Cable as a way to fight or race head-to-head — Tajiri's radical inversion was to make it a tool for giving creatures away, turning a competitive port into the heart of the experience.

The Pitch That Almost Nobody Understood
Around 1990 Tajiri brings his illustrated Capsule Monsters pitch booklet — its cover and Kanto map dated to 1990 — to Nintendo. The concept of a slow-burn collecting-and-trading RPG on a fading black-and-white handheld is so strange that it bewilders many, but Tsunekazu Ishihara grasps its potential and helps champion it. Nintendo, partly on the faith of Shigeru Miyamoto, signs Game Freak to build the game exclusively for Game Boy — greenlighting a project no one yet knew would take six years.
Did you know? The actual 1990 Capsule Monsters pitch document survived and was shown on Japanese national broadcaster NHK in 2018, revealing original creature sketches and an early Kanto-style world map decades before fans ever saw them.

Miyamoto's Gift: Two Versions, One World
Shigeru Miyamoto, mentoring Tajiri through development and serving as producer, contributes the structural masterstroke: split the game into two parallel versions — Red and Green — each missing creatures the other has, so completing the collection requires finding a friend and trading. It is a design that weaponizes scarcity and friendship at once, and it makes the Link Cable not optional but essential. Tajiri once joked to Miyamoto that to beat Mario you'd have to sell two copies to every customer; that joke became blueprint.
Did you know? Miyamoto specifically pushed for differently colored cartridges so the two versions' differences were instantly obvious on a store shelf — a marketing-and-design fusion that quietly invented the 'paired versions' model the franchise still uses 30 years later.

Six Years on the Brink of Collapse
Development drags on far longer than anyone imagined — roughly six years — and nearly bankrupts Game Freak. Money runs so thin that there is barely enough to pay the staff; five employees quit, and Tajiri refuses a salary, surviving on his father's income to keep the dream alive. At low ebbs the team weighs abandoning the project entirely, yet the core believers keep grinding on a game most of the industry had written off as too niche to matter.
Did you know? Tajiri worked obsessively, reportedly sleeping by day and developing by night, and took no salary for years — the studio that would help build a multi-billion-dollar empire spent its formative years one missed payroll from extinction.

Pocket Monsters & the Secret 151st
With Capsule Monsters un-trademarkable, the name is reworked — briefly to CapuMon, then finalized as Pocket Monsters — and by late 1995 Red and Green are ready. In the final stretch, after debugging is complete, programmer Shigeki Morimoto quietly deletes the debug tools to free roughly 300 bytes and squeezes in a secret creature, Mew — without Nintendo's knowledge, as a developers' inside joke. That hidden 151st monster, never meant to be found, would soon ignite a national obsession and become legend; a glitch later let some players actually encounter it, and Satoru Iwata credited the resulting frenzy with quadrupling sales.
Did you know? Mew was inserted so late and so unofficially that Nintendo had no idea it existed — Morimoto figured 'if no one finds it, Mew will be just for us developers,' yet rumors of the hidden creature became the word-of-mouth spark that helped the games explode.

Creatures Inc. and the Three-Way Pact
On November 8, 1995, Tsunekazu Ishihara establishes Creatures Inc. — with help from HAL Laboratory's Satoru Iwata — and its investment helps push the long-delayed game across the finish line. Creatures takes one-third of the Pokémon copyright, with Game Freak and Nintendo holding the rest, cementing the three-pillar ownership structure that still governs the franchise. The corporate architecture of an empire is quietly drawn up just months before launch.
Did you know? Satoru Iwata — later Nintendo's beloved global president — personally helped Creatures get off the ground and would soon famously compress Pokémon's battle data so a second region (Johto) could fit into Gold and Silver.

Pocket Monsters Red & Green launch on Game Boy (Japan)
On a cold late-February morning in 1996, two unassuming Game Boy cartridges quietly went on sale across Japan: Pocket Monsters Aka (Red) and Midori (Green). Six years in the making at Satoshi Tajiri's Game Freak, the games let children catch, train, and trade 151 creatures over a humble link cable, turning a dying handheld into a schoolyard obsession. Critics were lukewarm at first, but word-of-mouth among kids ignited a slow-burning fire that would become one of the largest entertainment franchises on Earth.
Did you know? Game Freak nearly went bankrupt during development, and several staff worked unpaid; the trading concept was inspired by Tajiri's childhood hobby of collecting insects and watching them pass between two Game Boys like bugs moving between tubes.

The Legendary Pokémon Offer: Mew distributed via CoroCoro
When CoroCoro Comic's May issue dangled an impossible prize — the chance for 20 lucky readers to have the mythical Mew added to their cartridge — Japan lost its mind. Nintendo braced for perhaps 3,000 entries; over 78,000 postcards flooded in. Winners mailed their cartridges to Morimoto himself, who hand-traded a uniquely coded Mew onto each one. Iwata later called this promotion the exact moment 'things turned round for Pokémon,' as weekly sales suddenly matched what had previously taken a month.
Did you know? Each distributed Mew was generated on Morimoto's own PC and traded over a Game Link Cable, stamped with its own Original Trainer ID — making those ~20 cartridges among the rarest legitimately-distributed Pokémon ever.

The First Pokémon Cards Ever: CoroCoro's Glossy Pikachu & Jigglypuff
Before a single booster pack hit a Japanese shelf, the November 1996 issue of CoroCoro Comic slid two glossy promo cards into the hands of schoolchildren: a grinning Pikachu and a wide-eyed Jigglypuff. Distributed on October 15, 1996, they beat the Japanese Base Set to market by five days, making CoroCoro — not a hobby shop — the true birthplace of the Pokémon TCG. The kids' manga magazine, already printing toward two million copies an issue, became the franchise's first and most powerful card-distribution engine, a role it would hold for decades.
Did you know? The original 1996 CoroCoro Pikachu credits Ken Sugimori as illustrator, but the art was actually drawn by Keiji Kinebuchi — a misattribution quietly corrected in later reprints.

Pokémon Blue: the mail-order special edition
To celebrate one million sales, CoroCoro Comic offered a refined third version — Pocket Monsters Blue — available only by mail order, never on store shelves. Orders shipped through December 1996, and the version proved so beloved it was eventually given a wide retail release in 1999.
Did you know? Japan's original 'Blue' is a different game from the West's Blue — the Western Blue was actually based on the Japanese Blue's improved engine, while Western Red/Green graphics descended from the original Japanese Red/Green.

The Pokémon TCG Is Born in Japan — Media Factory Lights the Fuse
On October 20, 1996, Media Factory published the very first Pokémon booster set in Japan — the 102-card Base Set (the 'Expansion Pack' plus starter decks) built by Creatures Inc. It codified the grammar the whole game still runs on: Pokémon with HP and attacks, Trainer cards for tricks, and Energy to fuel it all. This is patient zero for the entire hobby: every Charizard chase, every grading war, every record auction traces back to these cards. Japan got the first crack at them more than two years before English-speaking collectors.
Did you know? The earliest Japanese Base Set print run had no rarity symbol in the bottom-right corner at all — the so-called 'No Rarity' cards, now among the most coveted vintage Pokémon in existence.

With that, 'Pokémon, I Choose You!' aired on TV Tokyo and gave the games a beating heart. The anime made Pikachu a household face across Japan and built the emotional, friendship-first mythology that would carry the franchise around the world.
Did you know? Written by the late Takeshi Shudō, the series was originally planned to run only about a year and a half — instead it became one of the longest-running and most-watched animated franchises in history, eventually airing in nearly 200 countries.

In the early manga and an unaired anime pilot, the pink, moon-loving Clefairy was poised to be the face of Pokémon. But producers at OLM made a fateful swap ahead of the anime's launch: a yellow electric rodent named Pikachu. Reasoning that pink skewed toward girls while Pikachu's primary-color cuteness charmed boys, girls, and mothers alike — and read clearly from across a room — they crowned an underdog. It became one of the most recognizable characters on the planet.
Did you know? Pikachu isn't even an evolution starter or a Legendary — it was a common woodland creature in the games, yet the anime's casting decision turned it into a global icon more famous than Mickey Mouse in some markets.

The anime went dark for nearly four months, and the episode has never aired again anywhere on Earth. Ironically, it was Pikachu's attack that caused the flash, yet Porygon took the blame and was effectively exiled from the series for good.
Did you know? The incident earned a Guinness World Record for the most photosensitive epileptic seizures caused by a TV program, and birthed the 'Pokémon Shock' broadcasting guidelines on flashing imagery — and the 'watch in a brightly lit room' warning — still referenced worldwide today.

Only 39 official copies were ever awarded. It is the purest expression of Japan's trophy-card culture — value created not by print run but by impossibility — and decades later it became the most expensive trading card on Earth.

It was a quiet corporate handover with enormous consequences: tighter integration between video games and cards for the next two decades.
Did you know? The breakup got litigious — Wizards sued Nintendo in 2003, accusing it of using Wizards' own patented card-game methods to manufacture Pokémon cards in-house. The case was resolved before it ever reached a courtroom.

Diamond & Pearl and the Lv.X Leap
Japan's Diamond & Pearl set arrived November 30, 2006, ushering Generation IV's Sinnoh Pokémon onto cards and introducing the Pokémon Lv.X mechanic — a 'level-up' card you'd stack on an active Pokémon to grant a powered-up form mid-battle. Game Freak made its boldest creative gamble: for the entire main story of Black and White, ONLY the 156 brand-new Pokémon appeared — not a single Pikachu or Charizard until after the credits. Katy Perry's 'Electric,' Post Malone's reimagined 'Only Wanna Be With You,' and tracks from J Balvin, Lil Yachty, Mabel, and Vince Staples turned a kids' game into a cross-genre cultural statement. A monster brand had become a tastemaker.
Did you know? Katy Perry's 'Electric' came with a music video in which she literally teamed up with Pikachu — a song the singer described as being about 'recognizing one's own journeys and evolving.'

Legends: Arceus reinvents how you catch Pokémon
The boldest experiment in two decades, Arceus sent players back to a feudal-era Hisui (ancient Hokkaido) when humans and Pokémon barely coexisted. You crept through tall grass and hurled Poké Balls at wild Pokémon in real time without ever entering a menu — and the creatures could turn and attack YOU, sometimes knocking the trainer out cold. Half action game, half nature survey, it reframed the entire fantasy of being a Pokémon researcher.
Did you know? Arceus sold 6.5 million copies in its first week, outpacing the launch of Sword and Shield — proof that fans were hungry for the series to take real creative risks.

Pokémon GO crosses $6 billion in player spending
Six years after launch, Pokémon GO passed $6 billion in lifetime player spending — averaging a staggering $1 billion per year, with no signs of the AR hit fading. Long after pundits declared the 2016 craze a fad, the game had become one of the most durable revenue engines in mobile history, the United States alone accounting for over a third of all spending.
Did you know? Pokémon GO has sustained roughly $1 billion in player spending every single year since 2016, and by 2024 had climbed toward $8 billion in lifetime gross revenue.

Ash Ketchum finally becomes World Champion
After 25 years and countless heartbreaking near-misses, Ash Ketchum stood at the very top of the Pokémon world. In the Masters Eight final of the World Coronation Series, his Pikachu downed reigning champion Leon's Charizard, crowning Ash the strongest trainer on the planet at last. For millions who had grown up watching him lose just shy of glory, it was a quarter-century catharsis — the boy who said he'd be a Pokémon Master had, against the odds, actually done it.
Did you know? Fittingly, Ash sealed the world championship with Pikachu — the very first Pokémon he ever received — defeating a Charizard, the species of one of his earliest and most beloved (and famously disobedient) partners.

Scarlet & Violet — Pokémon's first true open world
The ninth generation finally delivered the dream: one seamless, fully open Paldea region you could explore in any order, tackling gyms, Titan Pokémon and a villainous team in whatever sequence you chose — solo or with up to four friends in co-op. The Spain-and-Portugal-inspired world launched to staggering numbers: over ten million copies in three days, the highest global sales of any software on any Nintendo platform within its first 72 hours.
Did you know? Despite shipping with notorious performance bugs at launch, Scarlet and Violet became the second best-selling games in the entire franchise, trailing only Gen I's Red, Green and Blue.

Scarlet & Violet: A New Generation of Cards
Japan launched the Scarlet & Violet era on January 20, 2023, opening Generation IX's Paldea region on cardboard and resetting the rarity system around Pokémon ex (lowercase, a nod to the 2003 originals). The era also pushed 'Special Illustration Rare' full-art cards into the spotlight as the new premium chase tier. With the post-boom market hungry for fresh product, Scarlet & Violet sets sold in record volumes worldwide.
Did you know? The lowercase 'ex' suffix was a deliberate callback to the 2003 Pokémon-ex era — the same name, twenty years apart, bookending two decades of escalating power-card mechanics.

Ash and Pikachu's final episode — a 26-year farewell
After 26 years, 1,232 episodes and an 11-part epilogue (which began in Japan on January 13, 2023), 'The Rainbow and the Pokémon Master!' sent Ash Ketchum and Pikachu off into the sunset. Reuniting with Misty, Brock, Professor Oak, Gary and even Team Rocket, the finale didn't end Ash's story so much as let the camera stop following it — the two simply walked down a new road together, Team Rocket's balloon trailing behind. It closed the longest-running protagonist arc in animation history and passed the torch to a new generation.
Did you know? Ash never actually 'retires' on screen — the finale deliberately leaves him and Pikachu still adventuring, framed as the audience choosing to part ways with him rather than his journey ending, a send-off rather than a conclusion.

Pokémon Horizons — a new era with Liko and Roy
Just three weeks after Ash's farewell, the anime rebooted itself for the first time in 26 years. 'Pokémon Horizons: The Series' premiered with a one-hour special introducing two brand-new heroes — Liko, a quiet girl carrying a mysterious pendant, and the energetic Roy — traveling with the Rising Volt Tacklers across regions including Paldea. It was a clean-slate gamble: a serialized, mystery-driven story unbound from Ash's shadow, signaling the franchise's confidence that the world it built could outgrow its original face.
Did you know? For the first time ever, the anime's lead protagonist is not a boy aiming to be a Pokémon Master but a girl on a more personal, lore-driven quest — and the series leans into ongoing serialized mysteries rather than the episodic monster-of-the-week format that defined the prior 25 seasons.

Pokémon TCG Live goes global
On June 8, 2023, Pokémon TCG Live launched worldwide on iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows, succeeding the long-running Pokémon TCG Online and bringing the physical card game into a modern, cross-platform digital client. Timed to the Scarlet & Violet—Paldea Evolved expansion, it let collectors and competitors build, battle, and ladder with the same cards spilling out of booster packs in stores — fusing the analog and digital halves of the TCG into one ecosystem.
Did you know? TCG Live's global launch deliberately coincided with a new paper expansion — the digital and physical card games released in lockstep, a synchronized strategy the franchise would lean on even harder a year later.

The 151 Set Reignites Kanto Nostalgia
Released in Japan on June 16, 2023, Pokémon Card 151 (sv2a) was a masterstroke of nostalgia: a subset devoted entirely to the original 151 Kanto Pokémon, complete with a Mew ex chase and the return of long-absent designs like Kadabra (its first card since 2003). It became one of the most in-demand modern sets ever, with sealed product flying off shelves and reprints racing to keep up. Twenty-seven years after the Base Set, the original 151 still ruled the room.
Did you know? 151 finally brought Kadabra back to the TCG after a roughly 20-year absence — the card had been quietly retired for years amid a long-running legal dispute over its design with illusionist Uri Geller, who later relented.

Pokémon Sleep — gaming while you dream
First released July 17, 2023 (rolling out globally by July 19), Pokémon Sleep turned the most passive act imaginable — sleeping — into gameplay, tracking your slumber so Snorlax could attract Pokémon while you rested. Conceived years earlier under the philosophy of making players 'look forward to waking up,' it was the franchise's most unconventional app yet: a wellness tool wearing a Pokémon costume, extending the brand from your waking hours into your bedside table.
Did you know? The concept was first teased back in 2019 alongside a dedicated Bluetooth 'Pokémon GO Plus +' device — meaning Pokémon planned to gamify your sleep four years before the app actually shipped.

Worlds Comes Home — Yokohama Hosts the First Asian World Championships
From August 11–13, 2023, the Pokémon World Championships were finally held in Japan — Yokohama's Pacifico convention center — making Yokohama the first city in Asia ever to host the event. It became the largest Worlds in history, drawing over 14,000 badged attendees and spilling out into city-wide Minato Mirai celebrations. After 27 years, the competitive crown returned to the soil where the cards were born.
Did you know? In-person attendance leapt from 10,083 in London (2022) to 14,194 in Yokohama, while Twitch viewership of the event jumped 37% to over 11.6 million views — a homecoming that broke every prior engagement record.

The Van Gogh Museum collab and the scalping riot
The Pokémon × Van Gogh Museum collaboration in Amsterdam married high art with high hype — Van Gogh-inspired Pokémon artwork and a free 'Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat' promo card. It exploded into the most infamous TCG scalping incident in history: crowds shoving, the gift shop stripped bare within minutes, and the museum forced to change its purchase policy. Cards meant as a gift were flipping for $300–$400, and staff were later suspended for allegedly leaking and stealing cards.
Did you know? The fallout had a final twist — Van Gogh Museum employees were suspended over allegations of stealing the promo cards and leaking insider information to resellers.

Pokémon Concierge — handcrafted stop-motion on Netflix
In its first-ever co-production with Netflix, The Pokémon Company handed the franchise to the celebrated stop-motion artisans at dwarf studios, who built a tiny tactile world by hand. The four-episode 'Pokémon Concierge' follows Haru, a burnt-out young woman who takes a job at a Pokémon Resort and learns to slow down alongside its anxious Psyduck and napping Pikachu. Cozy, wool-textured and emotionally gentle, it proved Pokémon could be prestige slow-TV — a warm hug rather than a battle.
Did you know? Every Pokémon, prop and palm-frond was physically sculpted and posed frame-by-frame in felt, clay and fabric — the same studio behind Netflix's 'Rilakkuma and Kaoru' — making it the franchise's first major foray into artisanal stop-motion rather than cel or CGI animation.

11.9 billion cards in a single year — TCG hits record scale
In the fiscal year ending March 2024, The Pokémon Company printed an unprecedented 11.9 billion trading cards in twelve months — the single biggest year in the game's history — pushing the lifetime total past 64.8 billion. The figures laid bare an almost incomprehensible scale: the world's best-selling trading card game was now manufacturing cards faster than ever, and still couldn't keep up with demand.
Did you know? By the end of March 2026, cumulative Pokémon TCG production had reached roughly 85 billion cards — more than ten cards for every human being alive — with the company printing at maximum capacity.

Japan's TCG Becomes a National Industry — and Fights the Scalpers
For the fiscal year ending March 2024, the Pokémon TCG earned a record ~$857 million in Japan alone — more than the next eight trading-card games combined, growing 37% in a single year. The boom carried a dark side: scarcity and scalping grew so intense that The Pokémon Company began requiring government ID to buy certain products at Japanese Pokémon Centers, restricting boxes to residents. The card had become a controlled national commodity.
Did you know? Pokémon's Japanese TCG revenue in that period outsold Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic, and One Piece combined — and global card production hit a record 11.9 billion cards, up nearly 23% year-over-year.

Honolulu 2024 — Worlds Crosses 13,000 and Becomes a Multi-Discipline Circuit
At the Hawaiʻi Convention Center on August 16–18, 2024, more than 13,000 players and fans packed the World Championships, spanning the TCG, VGC, Pokémon GO, and Unite. The franchise then announced its future stages from the closing ceremony — Anaheim 2025, San Francisco 2026 — signaling that organized play had matured into a multi-discipline global circuit with Japan's players among its perennial favorites. The competitive lane had become a year-round professional ecosystem.
Did you know? Hawaii has now hosted Worlds four times (2007, 2010, 2012, 2024) — more than any location outside the continental US — a nod to its role as the historic 'neutral ground' midway between Japan and the American mainland.

Pokémon TCG Pocket — the blockbuster launch
Released October 30, 2024 by Creatures Inc. and DeNA, Pokémon TCG Pocket distilled card collecting into its purest dopamine hit: two free booster packs a day, dazzling immersive art cards, and the simple thrill of the pull. It grossed $2.7 million on day one, hit $100 million in 17 days, $200 million within its first month, and stormed past 60 million downloads by December — one of the most successful mobile launches in the franchise's history.
Did you know? The game's runaway success drove DeNA's profit up a staggering 8,126.8% — and within roughly 100 days TCG Pocket had cleared half a billion dollars while nearing the launch-month revenue of Pokémon GO itself.

Niantic sells Pokémon GO to Scopely for $3.5 billion
On March 12, 2025, Niantic announced it was selling its entire gaming division — Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now — to Scopely for $3.5 billion, with Niantic adding $350 million of cash to bring the total package to $3.85 billion. The studio that had walked the world out the door in 2016 now handed its crown jewel to the maker of Monopoly Go!, pivoting itself toward AR, AI, and geospatial mapping. It marked the end of an era and a staggering price tag on a game many had once dismissed as a passing fad.
Did you know? Pokémon GO had grossed close to $8 billion in lifetime player spending by 2024 — so the $3.5 billion sale valued just the game roughly equal to the entire haul it had earned in nearly nine years of operation.

The $16.49M Pikachu Illustrator Smashes All Records
On February 16, 2026, Logan Paul's PSA Gem Mint 10 Pikachu Illustrator sold at Goldin for a staggering $16,492,000 — the most expensive trading card of any kind ever sold, eclipsing Magic's Black Lotus many times over and more than tripling his 2021 outlay. Designed by Pikachu's original creator Atsuko Nishida and given to just a handful of 1998 illustration-contest winners, the card crystallized how a children's promo had become a multimillion-dollar fine-art-grade asset. Reported buyer A.J. Scaramucci secured it as the franchise approached its 30th anniversary.
Did you know? Only 39 Pikachu Illustrator cards were ever printed — handed out as prizes in a 1998 CoroCoro magazine drawing contest — and this single PSA 10 copy's value climbed by roughly $11 million in under five years, appreciating faster than almost any traditional asset class.
