Satoshi Tajiri is born in Setagaya, Tokyo, and grows up in then-rural Machida, where rice paddies, streams and forests teem with insects. He becomes so obsessed with catching, identifying and trading beetles and stag beetles that the neighborhood children nickname him "Dr. Bug," and he dreams of becoming an entomologist. As Tokyo's suburbs are paved over and the bug habitats vanish, that lost childhood ritual of hunting and swapping living creatures becomes the emotional seed of an entire universe.
Did you know? The Pokémon Bug Catcher trainer class and the way creatures are 'caught' and 'traded' are direct echoes of Tajiri literally swapping beetles with friends as a kid — he wanted future children to feel that thrill even in a concrete city.

Game Freak: A Stapled Fanzine Is Born
Disenchanted with the shallow arcade games flooding Japan, the teenage Tajiri hand-writes and staples together a 14-page zine called Game Freak and sells it for 200 yen — a guide of high-score strategies and hidden tricks. A young artist named Ken Sugimori spots it in a dōjinshi shop, is captivated, and writes in offering to illustrate; by the ninth issue he is the magazine's artist and Tajiri's lifelong creative partner. One issue cracking the Xevious high score reportedly sells over 10,000 copies — proof that a couple of obsessive fans can move a crowd.

Game Freak Becomes a Studio
Convinced the only way to fix bad games is to build better ones, Tajiri and Sugimori incorporate Game Freak Inc. on April 26, 1989 — turning a fan magazine into a real development studio. Tajiri, largely self-taught, had spent years reverse-engineering how games worked; now he had a company to prove it. Quinty — Game Freak's First Real Game

The Link Cable Epiphany & "Capsule Monsters"
Watching kids hunched over Game Boys wired together by a Link Cable to play Tetris, Tajiri has his lightning bolt: he imagines tiny creatures crawling back and forth through that cable from one player to another — bug-trading, reborn in silicon. He sketches a concept he calls Capsule Monsters, named after gashapon capsule-toy machines and Ultraman's capsule kaiju, complete with a Kanto-like map and creatures that players would lure, collect and swap. The Link Cable, designed for competition, becomes instead the franchise's defining metaphor: connection.
Did you know? Nearly every other Game Boy game treated the Link Cable as a way to fight or race head-to-head — Tajiri's radical inversion was to make it a tool for giving creatures away, turning a competitive port into the heart of the experience.

The Pitch That Almost Nobody Understood
Around 1990 Tajiri brings his illustrated Capsule Monsters pitch booklet — its cover and Kanto map dated to 1990 — to Nintendo. The concept of a slow-burn collecting-and-trading RPG on a fading black-and-white handheld is so strange that it bewilders many, but Tsunekazu Ishihara grasps its potential and helps champion it. Nintendo, partly on the faith of Shigeru Miyamoto, signs Game Freak to build the game exclusively for Game Boy — greenlighting a project no one yet knew would take six years.

Pocket Monsters & the Secret 151st
With Capsule Monsters un-trademarkable, the name is reworked — briefly to CapuMon, then finalized as Pocket Monsters — and by late 1995 Red and Green are ready. In the final stretch, after debugging is complete, programmer Shigeki Morimoto quietly deletes the debug tools to free roughly 300 bytes and squeezes in a secret creature, Mew — without Nintendo's knowledge, as a developers' inside joke. That hidden 151st monster, never meant to be found, would soon ignite a national obsession and become legend; a glitch later let some players actually encounter it, and Satoru Iwata credited the resulting frenzy with quadrupling sales.

On October 20, 1996, Media Factory published the very first Pokémon booster set in Japan — the 102-card Base Set (the 'Expansion Pack' plus starter decks) built by Creatures Inc. 'Dennō Senshi Porygon' triggers the national 'Pokémon Shock' seizure incident
Twenty minutes into episode 38, Pikachu's Thunderbolt detonated a chain of missiles in a strobing explosion that alternated red and blue at roughly 12 flashes per second. Across Japan, children convulsed in front of their televisions; more than 600 — mostly children — were rushed to hospitals in one of the most infamous broadcasting incidents in history. The anime went dark for nearly four months, and the episode has never aired again anywhere on Earth. Mewtwo Strikes Back opened to roughly 31 million dollars and closed near 85.7 million in North America — the first anime film to ever top the American box office, a record it held for over two decades until Demon Slayer's Mugen Train.
