Indices

An index is one number that tracks a whole basket of cards over time — like the S&P 500 tracks 500 stocks. Base = 1,000 at inception; the level rises and falls with the basket's robust market price. A published day is never recalculated; if a past value ever has to be corrected, it is done as a dated, logged re-statement.
